What is the First Book Workshop?

The Toynbee First Book Workshop Competition is designed to support early career scholars in global history as they develop their first book manuscript.

Through this annual program, the Toynbee Prize Foundation funds an online workshop for one selected scholar, bringing together expert readers to offer feedback on the project. Readers are chosen not only for topical expertise, but for their broader global historical and methodological perspectives.

The goal is to help early career scholars strengthen the scope, relevance, and impact of their work before publication.

Eligibility

The competition is intended for early career scholars with a substantially complete first book manuscript in global, imperial, comparative, world, or transnational history.
Manuscripts should be available in English and at least 50% complete. Scholars based in the Global South are especially encouraged to apply.
